What is Digital Arrest?
A Digital arrest is a type of online scam where fraudsters pretend to be police officers, cybercrime officials, or government authorities. They scare people by accusing that they are involved in an illegal act and may be arrested. To make the situation look real, scammers show arrest warrants, documents (which all are fake) or make threatening calls saying that your bank account will be frozen and legal action will be taken. They then demand money or personal details to settle the case. There is no such legal concept as “digital arrest” in Indian law. It is completely fake.
How does the Digital Arrest Scam Work?
The Digital Arrest scam follows a typical pattern designed to create fear and force victims into compliance.
1. An unexpected call or message – Scammers usually initiate contact with the victims via calls, messages, emails or social media platforms.
2. Fake evidence and documents – Scammers send official looking documents, screenshots or even deep-fake videos to convince victims that their "crime" has been recorded.
3. Demand for money or personal information – Scammers then scare victims for immediate legal action, arrest, unless a fine is paid. They may also demand personal details like Aadhaar number, PAN card, bank details or OTPs.
How to Identify a Digital Arrest scam?
Scammers rely on fear and urgency to manipulate victims. Here are some key red flags.
1. No prior notice from authorities – Law enforcement agencies do not call individuals nor make video call to demand money or personal information over the phone. There is no legal provision for such calls.
2. Unverified phone numbers – Scammers often use unofficial numbers or internet based calling services to reach victims.
3. Pressure to act immediately – Any call that demands instant payment, threatens arrest without a proper legal process or asking for OTPs or bank details is likely fraudulent.
What to do if you’re targeted by a Digital Arrest Scam –
1. Auto block / silence whatsapp voice & video calls from unknown numbers- You will always get an opportunity to decide if you want to speak only once you have verified the caller’s identity.
2. Never share personal information – Do not share any personal details like Aadhaar number, PAN card or bank details and any more information over the phone, even if the caller claims to be an officials.
3. Verify the caller’s identity – Check the organisation’s official website and contact them through official numbers.
4. Disconnect the call – If you suspect a scam, end the call immediately.
5. Use a secure network – Avoid using public Wi-Fi for financial or personal activities.
Where to report a digital arrest scam –
1. National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal - https://cybercrime.gov.in/
2. Sanchar Saathi Portal - https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/Home/sfc-complaint.jsp
3. Cyber Fraud Helpline - Dial 1930 (toll-free) for immediate assistance.
Conclusion -
In today’s digital world, cyber fraud is becoming more sophisticated. Never panic, never share personal details and never make payments under pressure. Digital arrest scams succeed only when victims act out of fear rather than thinking. By staying calm and informed, we can stop scammers from taking advantage of innocent people and make the online space safer for everyone.
